Map Integration of Model Data for Optimising HGV Routing

The HeavyRoute project has studied an approach for the optimization of the routing of heavy goods vehicles, using specific information and criteria that are relevant for such vehicles. For this, standard map data for general navigation applications (geometry and road attributes) are extended with now available specific road attributes related to heavy goods transport, and with additional non-standard attributes that are determined as outcomes of specialized models. Using a test site in Sweden, model calculations were based on specific information that is available in relation to the Swedish National Road Database, and model outcomes were stored in arrays that are related to the network of this database. For using these data (in a real system but especially in simulation), a commercial map database for in-vehicle applications was deployed, and transfer and rearrangement of the model outcome data to this map database was needed. To enable this, a matching of the two networks was carried out, while only limited additional information beyond geometry was available. The paper describes this process, the issues encountered, and possible ways for improvement.
