Tampere Dynamic Route Guidance

The two main routes between eastern and western parts of Tampere region, Tampere shore route and Tampere ring route, are very busy roads and even a minor incident can congest the road network around the city. With help of dynamic route guidance, traffic can be guided to alternative routes in case of incidents. Dynamic route guidance improves traffic safety in cases of incidents and in bad weather conditions. The dynamic route guidance informs road users of incidents on the road network, travel times and weather conditions. The management system consist ten variable message signs that are controlled from the Traffic Management Center (TMC) of Tampere. Control is based on monitored traffic situation, weather conditions and incidents. The route guidance system has three control modes: automatic, proposal and manual control. Implementation of the dynamic route guidance system started in autumn 2008 and the system has been taken into use in beginning of year 2009.
