CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF EXISTING METHODS IN THE USE OF EXPANSIVE CLAYS IN ROAD-MAKING AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON TECHNIQUES MORE SUITABLE FOR GENERAL USE IN SPAIN

ANALISIS CRITICO DE LOS METODOS EXISTENTES PARA EL EMPLEO DE ARCILLAS EXPANSIVAS EN OBRAS DE CARREERAS Y RECOMENDACIONES SOBRE LAS TECNICAS MAS IDONEAS PARA SU USO HABITUAL EN ESPANA

This analysis, which provides a sound basis for future investigations on the use of expansive clays in road-making, deals with the following: (1) factors contributing to volume change phenomena in expansive clays and of the problems to which they may give rise in embankments and cuttings; (2) analysis of existing methods of identifying expansive clays, with a summary table of the various indices used; (3) definition of the types of suction and description of various ways of calculating them in situ and in the laboratory, study of humidity changes and of the external load and compaction density of the expansive clays, and also determination of the suction equilibrium profiles of the subgrade once it is covered by the road, and study of humidity changes in roads, including shoulders; (4) study of the static and dynamic parameters the engineer should use in the design of roads on expansive clays, with comments on results; (5) analysis of existing rational and empirical methods for fixing the thickness of road pavements on expansive clays; (6) summary of the previous chapters, and recommendations; (7) description of an oedometric cell designed in the Laboratorio del Transporte (Spain) for the measurement of the lateral pressure of soils subjected to different degrees of suction. /TRRL/
