Visually Disabled Persons’ Navigation. A Historical Review

The cane is the oldest orientation device used by people with severe visual disabilities. Since the Second World War common technology has been used as basis for the development of technical navigation devices for this group. These devices range from simple sound beacons to brain implants. Current and very promising development is based upon global positioning system (GPS) technology.
