The billion-journey challenge and our low carbon future

The initiative demonstrates the win-win outcome of tackling climate change and supporting economic growth by providing and using public transport. The author explains how buses and coaches run on existing infrastructure and can provide additional capacity more cheaply than other modes of transport. She outlines how savings can be achieved by switching from car to bus travel. The campaign believes transport users need only make small changes to achieve significant results. Users then discover how satisfying and beneficial the experience is, leading them to build up and extend their experience of coach and bus use. The campaign believes their aims can be achieved with appropriate central and local government input which encourages modal shift from car to public transport. In the second part of this opinion piece the director of corporate communications with Stagecoach Group points out how new technologies in cars or buses can help reduce emissions, but they do not preclude the need for making radical changes in transport choices. He emphasises the need for politicians and operators to work together in providing the incentives and encouragement to win transport users over to the greener option offered by coach and bus travel.
