Turning The Tide

Progress in the development of 'The Tide', a 1.8 km long LRT line in Norfolk, Virginia, USA, is outlined. Although envisaged twenty years ago, work only began in December 2007 with opening planned for early 2010. A detailed description is given of the route, which will run from the Eastern Virginia Medical Centre in the city centre eastwards to the Newtown Road terminus. The mass transit authority for the area, Hampton Roads Transit, will run eleven 28.5 m long, 230 passenger, Seimens S70 LRVs. Frequencies will be 7.5 minutes during peak hours, 15 minutes during off-peak hours and 30 minutes during early morning and late evening hours. Designated as a 'starter line', possible extensions in the Hampton Roads area are anticipated. These are briefly considered, in particular a link to Virginia Beach. Brief details are provided of the costs involved and estimates are made of likely passenger numbers.
