COMPARATIVE PHOTOINTERPRETATION FROM PANCHROMATIC, COLOR, AND EKTACHROME INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY

THIS PAPER REPORTS ON THE STUDY OF A CONTROLLED TEST AREA THAT WAS PHOTOGRAPHED WITH PANCHROMATIC, EKTACHROME, ANSCOCHROME, AND EKTACHROME INFRARED (IR) AERIAL FILM. THE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY WAS OBTAINED OVER A THREE-WEEK PERIOD FROM TERRAIN CLEARANCE ALTITUDES OF 2,500, 10,000, 20,000, AND 30,000 FEET. ON THE BASIS OF THIS LIMITED STUDY, THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN: (1) EKTACHROME IR PHOTOGRAPHY IS SUPERIOR TO COLOR AND PANCHROMATIC PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE MAPPING OF DRAINAGE AND VEGETATION; (2) COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY IS SUPERIOR TO PANCHROMATIC AND EKTACHROME IR FOR THE PURPOSE OF MAPPING CULTURE AND SOILS; AND (3) PANCHROMATIC PHOTOGRAPHY IS INFERIOR TO EKTACHROME IR AND COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY IN EACH OF THE SEVERAL CATEGORIES STUDIED. THE INTERPRETERS WERE NOT COMPLETELY CONVINCED OF THE VALIDITY OF THESE CONCLUSIONS BECAUSE THE QUALITY OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS SUPPLIED WERE NOT THE BEST, THE GROUND TRUTH WAS NOT AVAILABLE TO THEM, AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO DO DIRECT VISUAL COMPARISONS AMONG THE THREE SETS OF PHOTOGRAPHS. THEREFORE, THE INTERPRETERS SUGGEST THAT THIS STUDY BE USED AS A REFERENCE FOR PLANNING FUTURE STUDIES NOT AS CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE THAT ANY ONE OF THE THREE TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY IS SUPERIOR IN PERFORMANCE IN ANY ONE OF THE CATEGORIES STUDIED. BECAUSE OF THE TEST PROCEDURES, THE INTERPRETERS WERE NOT FULLY AWARE OF THE SUCCESS OF THEIR INTERPRETATIONS. SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS WERE MADE FOR FUTURE STUDY.
