REMOTE SENSING APPLICATIONS TO NEAR SURFACE GEOLOGY

AIRBORNE REMOTE SENSING TECHNIQUES, PARTICULARLY THERMAL MAPPING AND SPECIALIZED FORMS OF PHOTOGRAPHY, ARE NOW WITHIN THE ECONOMIC REACH OF STUDY PROGRAMS COVERING ONLY A FEW SQUARE MILES OF AREA. THE DATA ACQUISITION AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES ARE SUFFICIENTLY ADVANCED TO MAKE THESE A USEFUL TOOL FOR PRELIMINARY STUDIES OF THE SURFACE AND NEAR SURFACE GEOLOGY IN HIGHWAY CORRIDORS, INDUSTRIAL SITES, AND SIMILAR LOCATIONS. DATA INTERPRETATION IS QUITE DIFFICULT IN MOUNTAINOUS OR HEAVILY WOODED AREAS, BUT FOR A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION OF THE GEOGRAPHY WHERE DEVELOPMENT IS UNDER WAY, THE TECHNIQUES HAVE PRESENT VALUE. /AUTHOR/
