The Gelcro Project: toward a Forecasting of Road Surface Characteristics in Winter

A numerical model, called GELCRO, which simulates the development of a snow layer deposited on a road, was developed and validated with data from a comprehensive experimental field campaign. This work is conducted under the framework of a project which aims to develop a decision-making tool for road management in winter. In order to test the model capacity in an operational approach of forecasting, simulations were done with forecasted meteorological data on an experimental site, and compared with validation and measurement data. The results of these forecasting tests are discussed in this paper. They show that the model is able to forecast with good accuracy the holding of the snow on a road, and the road surface temperature evolution. For the covering abstract see ITRD E143097.
