PHOTO-EYE ON THE ROAD

TO GATHER DATA ABOUT ITS 2000 MILE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM, THE NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS PHOTOGRAPHING THE ENTIRE NETWORK WITH A SPECIAL CAMERA-EQUIPPED VEHICLE. THE CAMERA IS OPERATED OFF A CAM MOUNTED ON THE SPEEDOMETER AND CONNECTED TO THE CAR'S ODOMETER, WHICH PROVIDES AN ELECTRICAL IMPULSE TO ACTUATE THE CAMERA EVERY 100TH OF A MILE. THE MULTIDATA PHOTO LOGGING CAMERA IS EQUIPPED WITH A 200-FOOT MAGAZINE OF EKTACHROME EF FILM SUFFICIENT TO PHOTOGRAPH 80 MILES OF HIGHWAY. VIEWING IS DONE WITH AN EASTMAN KODAK RECORDAK MOTORMATIC MICROFILM VIEWER OR WITH DEAN LW DATA-ANALYZER, A VARIABLE SPEED PROJECTOR WITH STOP FRAME AND UP TO 24 FRAMES A SECOND. /DOT/
