HSDI Diesel Engines - FEV's High Power Density Concepts

The feasibility of downsizing diesel engines in order to reduce the consumption of diesel fuel is discussed. FEV's High Efficiency Combustion System (HECS), a combustion concept optimised for the highest specific power output, has been further developed to form the High Efficiency Combustion System - Power Optimised (HECS-P). Both concepts were evaluated for full- and part-load performance. FEV's high power concepts show the potential of increasing the specific power of High Speed Direct Injection diesel engines, including the measures necessary to achieve a higher specific power output while keeping the engine-out emissions compliant with legal requirements and keeping fuel economy on a superior level. By means of cycle simulations the achievable degree of downsizing dependent on the specific power is analysed and consequences for engine-out emissions and fuel consumption are formulated.
