All-LED Headlights for the Audi R8

The concept of using LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in vehicle lighting is discussed and advantages including environmental benefits and the opportunities for improvements to vehicle design are noted. A comparison made between the energy consumption of the external lighting system using conventional lighting and using LED lighting shows a 70% reduction for an average vehicle travelling at average speeds using LEDs. The use of LEDs in the various systems of the Audi R8 is described in more detail. The use of the LEDs and optical fibres used in daytime running lights as a feature at night is discussed. The main light function of the R8, which uses a projector and two reflector systems adjusted to form a single beam, is outlined. The problem of heat production by LEDs and the integration of LED technology into the vehicle electronic system are considered. It is suggested that LED efficiency will continue to increase and offer further design opportunities in the future.
