CARS, FUEL, AND POLLUTION

FEDERAL LAWS HAVE INCREASED THE PRESSURE TO PRODUCE CLEAN CARS BUT PRACTICAL RESULTS ARE FEW AND THE MASS PRODUCTION OF A NONPOLLUTING AND ENERGY-EFFICIENT CAR IS UNLIKELY IN THE NEAR FUTURE. SELECTED FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE ADVANCED AUTOMOTIVE POWER SYSTEMS PROGRAM, WERE VERSIONS OF THE RANKINE ENGINE, THE GAS TURBINE, THE STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINE, AND THE DIESEL ENGINE. HONDA'S VERSION OF THE STRATIFIED CHARGE ENGINE AND THE STIRLING EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE ARE OTHER POSSIBILITIES. THE WORKING OF THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH IT POLLUTING AND HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION CAPABILITIES, IS REVIEWED. THE ALTERATION OF ENGINES TO REDUCE POLLUTION SUCH AS DECREASED COMPRESSION RATIOS, CLEANER AIR-TO-FUEL MIXTURES, THE ADDITION OF POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION VALUES, AND THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION DEVICE ARE OUTLINED. THE DEVICES INTRODUCED BY MANUFACTURERS TO MEET THE CLEAN AIR STANDARDS FOR 1975-76, ARE TWO TYPES OF CATALYTIC CONVERTERS: NITROGEN OXIDE REDUCTION CONVERTER AND AN OXIDATION CONVERTER. THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES COMMITTEE ON MOTOR VEHICLE EMISSIONS, HOWEVER, ISSUED A REPORT WHICH OUTLINED NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THESE DEVICES. IT IS ALSO THOUGHT THAT THESE DEVICES WILL CAUSE A DECLINE IN FUEL ECONOMY. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES (ROTARY, STRATIFIED CHARGE, DIESEL AND GAS TURBINE ENGINES) AND THE EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES (RANKINE, AND THE STIRLING CYCLE ENGINE) WHICH ARE NOW BEING DEVELOPED. IN A DISCUSSION OF FUTURE PROSPECTS, CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF VARIOUS UNDERTAKINGS AND THE IMPACT ON SOCIETY OF THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES.
