Mass Movement

Impressive and challenging mass transit projects are an important part of the development picture with Dubai at the forefront. For geographical reasons, elevation of transport structures is an important part of the overall planning. The new metro's first rail line is reaching completion with further development planned for the future and a new monorail will connect to the island reclamation project. The Dubai Metro is a fully-automated and driverless medium weight transit system. Consisting of two lines, dubbed red and green, the system has been designed to take the strain off the overcrowded road system. Challenges of the project included the sheer scale and tight time frame plus the need to keep the visual impact of the structure clean and uncluttered. Innovative ideas and techniques were utilised to overcome the difficulties imposed by the unique nature of the project. The Palm Jumeirah monorail construction project is described. Another Middle East transport structure involves the idea of multiple bridge spans for pedestrian movement which helps pilgrims en route to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. A special multi-storey structure is being built to surround the stone pillars at which stones are thrown during the Hajj pilgrimage.
