ULTIMATELY, THE MORE EXPENSIVE UNLEADED, HIGH OCTANE GASOLINES WILL GIVE BETTER MILEAGE RESULTING IN CONSUMER SAVINGS. AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS, RECOGNIZED AS THE BEST MEANS OF INCREASING OCTANE, ARE REACTIVE IN A PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG PROCESS. THE TREND IN PHOTOCHEMICALLY REACTIVE EMISSIONS TO ATMOSPHERE IS PREDICTED THROUGH 1980. VOLATILITY AND EVAPORATION ARE IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF EMISSIONS CONTROL. REDUCTIONS IN HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS THROUGH THE USE OF DETERGENT/DISPERSANT ADDITIVES SHOW THAT CLEANLINESS ADDITIVES PROVIDE A DECIDED ADVANTAGE IN THE REDUCTION OF ENGINE EMISSIONS.
