Dubai: Building for the future

The Dubai Road and Transport Authority aims to develop an integrated transport network including metro, buses, water taxis and trams. An account is given of progress in the construction of the metro system, planned to be the world's longest driverless network and unique in its multiclass accommodation for passengers. The Blue and Purple lines have been delayed as a result of the financial crisis but work on the Red and Green lines is going ahead with opening expected in September 2009 and March 2010 respectively. Brief details are given of the construction of the Red line, which has included 10 km of tunnels, 2 power stations, 43 km of elevated bridges and 2 park and ride car parks and some of the difficulties encountered. Further lines are planned to bring the overall network to 318 km. Brief details are given of companies involved in the project and of the speeds, train intervals and ticketing systems envisaged.
