LET'S TRY POOLING IT

FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE WORLD WAR II AMERICANS ARE BEING ASKED TO CURTAIL THE USE OF AUTOMOBILES. THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF FUEL, AND THE COMMUTER'S SPECTACULAR CONSUMPTION IS AN AREA IN WHICH TO BEGIN ECONOMIZING. CARPOOLS ARE ONE OF THE MOST ECONOMIC MEANS OF DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF RUSH HOUR CRUSH AND FUEL SHORTAGE, BUT COMMUTER COOPERATION IS NECESSARY TO MAKE THEM WORK. RECENT STUDIES INDICATE THAT THE AUTOMOBILE WITH JUST ONE OCCUPANT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE FORM OF TRANSPORTATION FOR COMMUTERS. THIS FACT MAY BE AN INCENTIVE TO GET PEOPLE INTO CARPOOLS. IF CAR OCCUPANCY COULD BE INCREASED FROM THE PRESENT 1.6 TO 2.0 PERSONS PER VEHICLE, 20 PERCENT OF CARS WOULD BE REMOVED FROM RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. CONVENIENCE IS ANOTHER FACTOR IN CARPOOLING. MANY COMPANIES GRANT RESERVED PARKING SPACES TO EMPLOYEES WHO CARPOOL. IN ORDER TO FACILITATE THE FORMATION OF CARPOOLS, COMPUTER MATCHING PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN SET UP. SOME COMPANIES ARE NOW PURCHASING VANS FOR USE BY EMPLOYEE CARPOOLS. IT IS CLEAR THAT MUCH CAN BE DONE TO ELIMINATE TRAFFIC CONGESTION AND CONSERVE FUEL IF PEOPLE WILL COOPERATE.
