SPIRALING URBAN TRANSIT COST OVERRUNS SUGGEST NEED FOR NEW TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS

PRESENT URBAN TRANSIT POLICIES, OR LACK OF SUCH POLICIES, MAY BE LEADING TO MASSIVE OVERRUNS IN TERMS OF COSTS PER DECADE. IT IS ESTIMATED THAT THESE OVERRUNS COULD BE IN THE AREA OF $45 BILLION DUE TO THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF LARGE CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICTS; $90 BILLION DUE TO TREND RATHER THAN PLANNED DEVELOPMENT; AND $90 BILLION DUE TO POOR AUTOMOTIVE REGULATION. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE ONLY VALID LONG-TERM SUPPLEMENT TO THE AUTOMOBILE IS PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT.
