BART DATA DISCUSSED

THE BOEING CORPORATION PREPARED A FINANCIAL ANALYSIS OF THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM TO WHICH THE DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH RESPONDED WITH A STATEMENT EXCERPTED HERE. THE EXCERPT DEALS CHIEFLY WITH BART'S METHOD OF ASSIGNING CAPITAL COSTS AND PROFIT AND LOSS, AND WITH ERRORS IN THE BOEING ANALYSIS RESPECTING ANTICIPATED OPERATING REVENUES. ONE OF THE TABLES IS A SCHEDULE OF DEBT SERVICE FOR FY 64-82, WHILE THE OTHER IS A BREAKDOWN OF PASSENGERS, PASSENGER MILES, AND OPERATING COSTS AND REVENUES. THE LATTER ANTICIPATES AN OPERATIONAL SURPLUS OF 2.8 CENTS PER PERSON TRIP AND A TOTAL DEFICIT (INCLUDING CAPITAL COSTS) OF 87.8 CENTS PER PERSON TRIP.
