Automated Urban Transport Systems: A Decade of EC-Funded Research and Development

A series of finished and still ongoing EC-funded research and development projects on the use of road-based automated transport systems for more sustainable urban mobility have been carried out. After almost a decade of work in this area an integrated analysis of experiences, lessons learned, success stories and failures has been carried out. This paper will describe the state-of-the-art of these systems, results of various evaluation activities, and user needs analyses. Based on this, common themes, gaps in research, systems potentials, and barriers to implementation will be identified. This in turn will enable the formulation of policy advice on how to best implement this technology in order to overcome current implementation barriers, and recommendations for future work in this area to close current research gaps identified.
