Level 2 Rolls Out Across the Rocade Nord

Under a national investment program approved by the government in 2007, Algeria's Rocade Nord east-west rail line linking Oran and Annaba is being electrified at 25 Kv 50 Hz. Single-track sections are being doubled, and heavily rebuilt in some cases, for improved alignment. Three sections of the route are scheduled to have European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 installed following a project review earlier this year. Algeria's Agence Nationale pour la Realisation et le Suivi des Investissements Ferroviaires decided on ERTMS as the best technology available "off the shelf". Tenders are being called to supply both diesel locomotives and SNTF's CAF-built intercity trainsets with the European Train Control System (ETCS), an ERTMS component. The authors explore the scope of the contract, the dropping of ERTMS Level 1, contingency planning, and commissioning and roll-out.
