WORLD'S UNDERGROUND RAILWAYS

A DESCRIPTION OF THE AUTOMATIC TRAINS USED BY THE BRITISH POST OFFICE TO MOVE MAIL UNDERGROUND BETWEEN POSTAL STATIONS IS PRESENTED. A COMPRESSED-AIR SYSTEM, STARTED IN 1861, AND CAPABLE OF MOVING CARS AT SPEEDS UP TO 40 MPH IS DESCRIBED. THIS SYSTEM WAS CLOSED WHEN LEAKS IN THE TUNNELS REDUCED COMPRESSION AND IN 1928 AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM WAS CONSTRUCTED, WHICH IS CLAIMED TO BE "THE NEAREST APPROACH TO A FULLY AUTOMATIC RAILWAY YET IN EXISTENCE."
