URBAN TRANSPORTATION, ITS EFFECT ON PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT

THERE EXISTS A TRANSPORT-SERVICES GAP BECAUSE THE RELATIVE EFFICIENCY OF INER-CITY AND INTRA-CITY GOODS MOVEMENT IS WIDENING TO THE POINT THAT IT IS NOW NOT WORTH INCREASING THE EFFICIENCY OF THE FORMER SINCE THE LATTER CAN'T KEEP UP. THE CARRIER NEEDS HELP TO REDUCE THIS TRANSPORT-SERVICES GAP. THE URBAN PLANNER N NEEDS TO REALIZE THAT GOODS MOVEMENT IS AS IMPORTANT AS PEOPLE MOVEMENT AND THAT THE PLANNING FOR EACH SHOULD MERGE INSTEAD OF BEING CONSIDERED SEPARATELY. THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY POSSESSES VALUABLE HOURLY DATA FOR GOODS MOVEMENT WHICH THE PLANNERS SHOULD HAVE ACCESS. A LIST OF POSSIBLE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT AREAS IN NEW TRANSPORTATION MODES FOR PEOPLE AND FOR GOODS IS OFFERED.
