FIGHTING THE URBAN SNARL

THIS IS A DESCRIPTIVE ARTICLE RELATING INCIDENTS OF CONGESTION IN SEVERAL LARGE URBAN AREAS. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ARE OFFERED BY A DIRECTOR OF TRAFFIC, A WAREHOUSE AND TRUCKING COMPANY EXECUTIVE, AND A COMPANY DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION. COST FIGURES PER MILE ARE GIVEN FOR THE CBD TRAFFIC AND OUTER SUBURB TRAFFIC. A FOUR POINT LIST OF BASIC PROBLEMS OF CONGESTION IS INCLUDED ALONG WITH A DISCUSSION OF THE POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE SURROUNDING URBAN TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS. TWO PROMISING DEVELOPMENTS ARE DESCRIBED; THE COMPLETION OF THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY BELTWAYS AND CROSSTOWN EXPRESSWAYS, AND THE TREND TOWARD SURBURBAN DISTRIBUION CENTERS WHERE THE LOAD IS BROKEN DOWN FOR SMALLER VEHICLE URBAN MOVEMENT.
