Rivals Vie to Secure Shares in Vibrant Market

Although issues of state and private ownership remain in Australia's rail freight market, competition thrives. The two major players are Tasmanian Railway, which officially takes over the business known as PN Tasmania on November 30, 2009, and Queensland Rail, which has seen its profitable portions sold off by the government of Queensland. As the two lines have absorbed many other rail operators, new niche operators have emerged, including CFCLA, Coote Industrial, El Zorro, IRA, SCT, and SSR. Operations are discussed, including the competition between Tasmanian Railway and Queensland Rail for coal customers in Queensland and New South Wales as new coal projects are being introduced. A table outlines motive power orders in Australia from 2007 to 2009.
