Flourishing Traffic Triggers Project Bonanza

The outlook for many of Australia's railroads is changing due to strong support for infrastructure projects and rolling stock renewal. This comes after decades of rail investment barely being mentioned by politicians. While Australian intermodal and bulk freight rail has sharply declined in the global economic crisis, Australian passenger rail ridership has surged. The federal government is investing A$7.9 billion through its Nation Building Programme through 2013-14, and considers it part of an 'unprecedented investment' in land transport. State government investment is also examined. Inserts examine a revived high speed rail proposal; megaprojects being scrutinized; and a private terminal scheduled to open.
