Allies' Forces

In western Pennsylvania, the Boulevard of the Allies and Forbes Avenue connect the downtown area of the City of Pittsburgh with Oakland, a regional center for culture, higher education and health care. Referred to as the "Gateway to Oakland," the high-profile and well-traveled corridor was in dire need of rehabilitation, including replacing the severely deteriorated main span Boulevard of the Allies bridge and two ramp structures; addressing inadequate sight distance at the existing ramp structures and other existing traffic safety issues; and improving the structures' substandard geometric configuration. The authors examine challenges to finishing the new Gateway to Oakland, now complete, including design and budget concerns.
