STATEWIDE COMPARATIVE WAGE SCALES FOR HIGHWAY EMPLOYEES

EACH NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION RESIDENCY SUBMITTED WAGE DATA FOR TWO OF ITS TOWNS. THIS COVERED HIGH AND LOW SALARY FOR THE TITLES OF LABORER, HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR, CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR AND FOREMAN. FIGURES FROM THE PUBLIC EMPLOYEE RELATIONS BOARD FILES WERE USED TO VALIDATE THIS DATA. THE HIGHEST WAGES FOUND IN THIS SURVEY ARE IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY WHERE THE HIGH FOR LABORERS IS $5.08. THE HIGH FOR HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS IS $5.39. THE STATE'S TURNOVER AMONG LABORERS IN WESTCHESTER RANGES FROM 35 TO 50 PERCENT. THE TURNOVER FOR HIGHWAY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS IS CLOSE TO 25 PERCENT. THE OTHER EXTREME IN TURNOVER IS FOUND IN RURAL RESIDENCIES. /AUTHOR/
