Sophistication of Traffic Information Provision Utilizing Latest Technologies

This paper introduces an estimation method of congestion length using up-link information of infrared beacons and its verification result. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has provided congestion length as a kind of traffic information through traffic information boards, radios and car navigation systems. The MPD measures the congestion length using the traffic information collected by vehicle detectors. But it is so difficult to install the vehicle detector at most of the tunnels, bridges, etc that the MPD couldn’t figure out the congestion length there. Therefore, the MPD developed a new estimation method of the congestion length using up-link information of infrared beacons and introduced it to the STREAM, our traffic control system, in 2008. This method enables us to predict the congestion length with only installing the infrared beacons at both ends of any sections of the road which you want to.
