Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Retaining Walls

This advisory memorandum provides details of design concerns associated with MSE walls constructed for Department facilities. Recommendations for alterations and enhancements to current design procedures are included. These recommendations are applicable to all MSE walls constructed for Department facilities, but are particularly appropriate for walls constructed immediately adjacent to structures supported by deep foundations. This memorandum was initiated by the Department due to District 11-0 experiences with the long-term performance of MSE walls in western Pennsylvania. Ultimately, the intent of this effort is to improve MSE retaining wall design and construction methods. The recommendations included herein are based on the conclusions of a research project undertaken by the District 11-0 Bridge Unit. The research project included investigation of existing bridges in western Pennsylvania with MSE wing walls that are exhibiting substandard or unacceptable performance in the form of excessive settlements and differential movements.
