The New Robel IFO 57.44 Maintenance Vehicle for Catenary Installations

Robel Bahnbaumaschinen GmbH presented a new maintenance vehicle at the 25th VDEI International Exhibition of Track Technology (iaf 2009) held April 21-23, 2009, in Munster, Germany. The IFO 57.44 was developed for rapid repair interventions when faults occur on catenary installations. IFO is the acronym for "Instandhaltungsfahrzeug fuer Oberleitungsanlagen" (or "Maintenance Vehicle Catenary Installations" when translated from German into English). After Robel had received a contract from a major European railroad company to supply a number of these types of vehicles for use throughout the customer's network, the IFO 57.44 was developed within two years. The authors examine the IFO 57.44's crash optimized, strong, and environmentally friendly design, including drive system, vehicle interior, and roof-mounted equipment.
