Using a Maintenance Decision Support System in Winter Service Operations

The aim of winter maintenance is to provide a safe transportation system, with optimal mobility, and to have minimal impact on the environment while achieving the goals of safety and mobility. In achieving these goals, agencies are being pushed to improve both efficiency and effectiveness of their winter maintenance activities. One tool that can be helpful in improving winter maintenance activities is some sort of decision support system. This paper compares 3 different types of such systems which have been and continue to be used in winter maintenance operations in the United States and Canada. The benefits and drawbacks of each of the 3 systems are discussed. Some challenges to the effectiveness of these support systems are presented and possible solutions are considered.
