Preventing Future Salt Shortages

Snowfighting is vital. Given the inherent unpredictability of snowfighting emergencies, professional managers must ensure availability of trained personnel, appropriate equipment, and sufficient amounts of materials for winter storm emergencies. Recent winters have required record amounts of deicing salt. One year ago, a perceived 'salt shortage' spurred near panic buying that tripled snowfighting agencies' salt acquisition cost. North American salt producers responded heroically, ensuring all agencies access to salt. Changes in the salt procurement system are required to prevent future salt shortage concerns, foremost among them investments by transportation agencies in salt storage facilities that can hold a full-year's salt requirements.
