MEDIANS OF DIVIDED HIGHWAYS: CURRENT STATUS OF KNOWLEDGE AND ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

THE FUNCTIONS OF MEDIANS AND THE LIMITATIONS ON MEDIAN DESIGN HAVE BEEN DERIVED FROM A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE TO SUMMARIZE THE MORE IMPORTANT THOUGHTS CONCERNING MEDIAN DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE. THEY ARE INTENDED TO SERVE AS AN AID IN BRINGING EXISTING KNOWLEDGE INTO PROPER FOCUS AND IN PROVIDING A PROPER PERSPECTIVE OF THE GRADUALLY ACCUMULATING PIECES OF NEEDED INFORMATION ON MEDIAN DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE. THE DEGREE OF CONTROL OF ACCESS ON STREETS AND HIGHWAYS GREATLY AFFECTS THE NUMBER AND TYPES OF FUNCTIONS WHICH MEDIANS ARE EXPECTED TO PERFORM. THEREFORE, TWO SEPARATE LISTS OF MEDIAN FUNCTIONS, BASED ON DEGREE OF ACCESS CONTROL, ARE PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
