ALIGNMENT AND GUIDANCE TO THE LASER BEAM

THE LASER, A HIGHLY COMPLEX ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT WHICH IS USED IN MANY SCIENTIFIC FIELDS, IS NOW BEING USED TO AID IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF 2 WATER DIVERSION TUNNELS AS A CONVENIENT METHOD OF MOLE GUIDANCE. THE LASER BEAM HAS REDUCED THE MANPOWER REQUIRED AND, THUS, HAS MINIMIZED ERROR. THE LASER-TRANSIT UNIT IS PLACED IN THE TUNNEL ON AN ADJUSTABLE VERTICAL HEAD AND TABLE. THIS WILL ESTABLISH THE LASER BEAM AT THE MOST CONVENIENT LOCATION IN THE TUNNEL. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS CAN GREATLY REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE LASER. DUST AND EXTREME HEAT, SUCH AS AN ELECTRIC WELDING ARC, CAN REDUCE AND DISTORT THE RESULTING BEAM. THIS TENDENCY TO DISPERSE CAN BE HELPED BY INSTALLING A SAFETY DEVICE OR A PLATE WITH A HOLE IN IT WHICH WILL TEND TO LET ONLY THE CENTER OF THE BEAM THROUGH AND, THEREBY, INCREASE BEAM STABILITY. THE LASER BEAM IS NOW BEING USED TO MAINTAIN, AUTOMATICALLY, CONSTANT GRADE ON THE BLADE OF A TRACTOR. AN OPERATOR IS REQUIRED, BUT ANY DESIRED GRADE CANT BE MADE WITH THE USE OF THE LASER BEAM. CUTTING LASERS HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH A ONE KW POWER OUTPOUT.
