B.C. BUILDS HIGHWAY FILM LIBRARY

THE B.C. DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS HAS FILMED 6,500 MILES OF PRIMARY HIGHWAY FOR A VARIETY OF REFERENCE PURPOSES: ROADWAY GEOMETRICS, INCLUDING PAVEMENT AND SHOULDER WIDTHS, GRADIENTS, CURVATURES, SIGNT DISTANCES, LIMITED CLEARANCES, ROADWAY AND GUARDRAIL CONDITION, INVENTORY AND LOCATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL AND SERVICE ITEMS (SUCH AS SIGNS, SIGNALS, CHANNELIZATION, TURN SLOTS AND PARKING AREAS), ROADSIDE DEVELOPMENT, AND ROAD ACCESSES, CULTURAL FEATURES. THE INVENTORY IS RECORDED ON 16 MM COLOR FILM. THE MOVIE CAMERA AND ITS ACCESSORIES ARE MOUNTED BESIDE THE DRIVER IN A CAB- OVER 1/2-TON VAN. A SECTION OF THE WINDSHIELD IS REMOVED DURING FILMING AND THE CAMERA IS ANGLED DOWN TO INCLUDE PAVEMENT 20 FEET AHEAD OF THE VEHICLE IN ITS VIEW. A STOP ACTION MECHANISM ATTACHED TO THE SPEEDOMETER OF THE VEHICLE ENABLES A FRAME TO BE TAKEN EVERY 84 1/2 FEET. /CGRA/
