AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOGRAMMETRY IN THE COAST & GEODETIC SURVEY

THE COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY USES PHOTOGRAMMETRY AS ONE OF ITS PRINCIPAL SURVEYING SYSTEMS IN SUPPORT OF MAJOR PROGRAMS SUCH AS AERONAUTICAL AND NAUTICAL CHARTING, OCEANOGRAPHY, AND SATELLITE TRIANGULATION. PHOTOGRAMMETRIC INSTRUMENTS AND PROCEDURES INCLUDE AN INTEGRATED ARRANGEMENT OF AERIAL CAMERAS, A PHOTOGRAPHIC LABORATORY WITH FACILITIES FOR PROCESSING COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY, AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR BOTH ANALOG AND ANALYTIC AEROTRIANGULATION. COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY IS USED EXTENSIVELY AND CAN NOW BE APPLIED IN ALL PHASES OF METRIC PHOTOGRAMMETRY, INCLUDING AEROTRIANGULATION. THIS FACT IS OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE TO PHOTOGRAMMETRY BECAUSE OF THE SUPERIOR INTERPRETATIVE QUALITIES OF COLOR. THE PROCESSING OF COLOR PHOTOGRAPHS IS MORE COMPLEX THAN FOR BLACK-AND-WHITE BUT IS A PRACTICABLE PROCEDURE WELL WORTH THE EXTRA EFFORT INVOLVED. /AUTHOR/
