Viability of Data Exchange Standards in Public Transport for the UK

In the UK, buses carry more passengers annually than any other public transport (PT) mode (5 billion compared to rail’s 2 billion). And they share the road with a growing number (over 30M) of vehicles for private transport and freight. There are congestion problems in almost every major town and city and this impacts directly on the ability of bus operators to adhere to bus schedules which reduces the overall service levels for the passengers. Part of the solution to the problem of congestion is satellite tracking of the buses to provide Real-Time Information (RTI) to passengers thereby allowing them to make informed and intelligent decisions about their travel.
