Mobile Phones for Mobile Cities

The University of California, Berkeley, is sponsoring the Mobile Millennium research project. Through this program, traffic speeds are monitored and real-time traffic conditions transmitted to all participants through mobile phones. California motorists can participate in the service by simply downloading the free software. The software automatically transmits relevant information, which is encrypted and anonymous. Mobile Millennium is driven by motorists themselves, requires no additional infrastructure, and is free. The partnership between industry, government, and academia is set to expand to other parts of the nation and world. More information can be obtained online at www.traffic.berkeley.edu.
