Results from London's Distance-Based Charging Trials

These trials aimed to investigate the feasibility of introducing alternative distance-based charging schemes to operate within London’s extended Congestion Charging Zone. The trials aimed to study: the feasibility of gathering journey/charging data under real conditions, the ability to OBUs to report journey data, vendors to support volunteers in Central London and journey patterns inside Central London. These latest trials used 500+ volunteer drivers going about their normal day to day business and driving routes and in ways which were unknown a priori to the trials team. Earlier trials used dedicated drivers, routes and trials infrastructure to gather data, whilst here existing vendors’ infrastructure was employed. Over three months, valuable data were obtained on driver patterns by route, distance, time of day and class of vehicle and provided insightful information on the capabilities of GNSS based systems.
