Benefits of Linking Macro-Demand Forecasting Models and Microsimulation Models

Multimodal transportation modeling can be achieved on several levels of spatial and temporal scale, from regional macroscopic level to the most detailed microscopic level. This paper defines the macro- and micro-modeling types and identifies opportunities for software integration. Linking macro-demand forecasting models and microsimulation will require overcoming a range of theoretical and practical issues. The development of a well-defined data-exchange structure for both model operations will overcome many of these problems and simplify the transfer of data between macro and micro model scales. Given the geospatial nature of much transport-related data, geographic information system platforms appear to be well suited for data storage, relationship development and interpretation.
