Gautrain on Track

South Africa's Gautrain high speed rapid rail link will travel across Gauteng's three metropolitan areas at 160 km per hour. It will link ten stations across an 80 km expanse, with three of the ten underground. The first phase of Gautrain is scheduled to be operational in time for the World Cup. This will link O.R. Tambo International Airport with Sandton. The balance of the Gautrain system is scheduled to open in 2011. In the current South African context of large transportation projects beginning to take off despite robust governance models not always being in place, the depth of governance structures attached to the Gautrain project and lessons learned in its implementation are of great value. The author examines Gautrain in regard to intergovernmental cooperation, public private partnership structuring, and governance.
