The Power of Milling

This article explains how better milling of pavements can save money for transportation agencies during challenging economic times. The author, a research engineer for the National Center for Asphalt Technology, points out that milling provides a supply of RAP material that can be reused in hot-mix asphalt pavements, which can result in substantial savings. He suggests, too, that the precision of new milling machines makes possible some innovative techniques, including micro-milling, which leads to a much smoother plane surface allowing a permeable layer to be placed directly on top of the milled surface. Milling can also be used to remove surface distresses, maintain the reveal height along curb and gutter, and to restore cross-slope.
