09:09:09: Dubai Heralds the Dawn of Gulf Rail Rush

The opening of the Red Line, the first subway line in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this month is a milestone in the development of railroads in the Gulf region. It is at the core of Dubai's ambitious surface transportation plan, stipulating major investment in public transit. Both the Green Line, now under construction, and Red Line are fully automated. Seven light rail lines are also being planned. In addition to the United Arab Emirates' ambitious plans, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar have seen proposals for heavy rail network, while there is heavy investment by Saudi Arabia in the Middle East's first high-speed line as well as new heavy-haul and mixed-traffic lines. This makes the Gulf region seem a key focus for the world's rail industry in the coming decade. Inserts provide information on the capacity of Dubai's subway, as well as the scheduled 2014 opening of a light rail system in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
