Republic of Korea: Expressway Bridge Management

Republique De Coree - La Gestion Des Ponts Autoroutiers

In 1969, the first Korean expressway was opened to traffic, measuring 29.6 km long. The expressway network is 3,143 km long today, and includes 6,663 bridges. The number of bridges is expected to be 14,000 by 2020. The available budget for network management, however, including human resources, is not keeping pace with expressway system growth. Some shortcomings with respect to bridge management recently have been identified based on observed performance, and expressway network users are demanding a higher level of service. Bridges traditionally were managed using a process of preventive maintenance. As the expressway network's effective operation is fundamental to the nation's economy, however, the Korea Expressway Corporation has implemented the Expressway Bridge Management System to manage the bridge system. The author briefly describes this in this paper. An insert provides road relevant information for the Republic of Korea.
