Intelligence Inside

This brief article examines ways in which video analytics technology can provide automated monitoring and decisions to improve efficiency and reduce response time to events. The emergence of IP CCTV has resulted in big changes for remote video monitoring. The author of this article suggests three major developments are just around the corner. He suggests that the ability of cameras monitoring a particular space connected to the edge of a distributed IP network will become smarter; multiple cameras monitoring a common space will automatically collaborate with one another; and the metadata acquired from a single camera or a group of them will feed to a central server and enable a higher level of reasoning of a particular “event web.” The author, who leads BT Research’s efforts in image and visual computing, also describes his company’s enhanced portfolio of intellectual property rights and advances in video analytics.
