The Final Frontier: ITS Could Boldly Go Where It Hasn't Been Before If the Industry Can Fully Exploit the Potential of Satellite Communications Technology

This article examines the potential of satellite communications technology and transportation-related applications. The author describes eCall, which uses satellites to report all accidents to a control center. Fleet management is also a suitable application for satellite communications, and is a vast improvement over using cell phones to track vehicles, such as trucks, traveling through different countries in Europe. Fleet managers are also integrating satellite communications into onboard equipment to provide on-demand communication between a truck driver and his superiors. The author describes the popularity in the US of satellite broadcasting and SIRIUS ONstar service for vehicles. In addition, the author describes the work of Logica, one of the key players in the space sector, and the projects it is engaged in related to traffic congestion and road management.
