The World Bank recognizes that worldwide, transportation enables change that puts development goals in reach. The 2008-2012 Transport Business Strategy of the World Bank Group is presented. Strategy objectives include safe, clean, and affordable transportation. Regional differences are examined. Five strategic directions are detailed: creating the conditions for increasing support for transportation investment and governance; deepening engagements in the roads and highways subsector; increasing engagement in the urban transportation subsector; diversifying engagement in transportation for trade; and controlling emissions and mitigating impact of transportation and climate change. An insert details the history of collaboration between the World Bank and World Road Association in providing services to developing nations.
