Hard shoulder running eases motorway traffic jams

A major roll-out of managed motorway schemes across England, announced by the Government as part of the national roads programme, will use technology trialled by the Highways Agency to deliver a modern and reliable motorway network. The first trial was carried out in September 2006 on the M42 in the West Midlands during busy periods. This article discusses hard shoulder running and how it may be used to ease congestion, and how additional benefits may be obtained, such as environmental impact reduction from lower carbon emissions.
