Assessment, maintenance and refurbishment of the Alexandra Avenue abutment at Swan Street Bridge

The Swan Street Bridge abutment rehabilitation aims to significantly extend the life of the bridge through the addition of strengthening works for the existing Alexandra Avenue abutment substructure and a new approach structure to replace the failed approach slabs. This will extend the life of the before refurbished components by another 100 years. A significant design complication is that the bridge is located near influential sporting, cultural and transportation infrastructure. As part of this key network, the bridge has to remain operational for the vast majority of the construction period. Therefore the rehabilitation and new works design had to account for construction work staged so that traffic disruption could be minimized. This paper discusses Aurecon's process for a strengthening design that allows the bridge to remain operational for the vast majority of a staged construction period thereby minimizing traffic disruption at a key transport network node. The design will also allow the newly constructed works to gradually assume the function of the existing sub-structure as the existing bridge loads and design actions resulting from ongoing ground movement are redistributed from existing to new foundations.
